The Further Adventures of "Ma & Pa Kettle" [VHS]
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2002-09-27 Summary: NUTS TO BIRDIE HICKS! ... Percy Kilbride and Marjorie Main star in this spin-off of the EGG AND I, a 1947 flick in which they were scene-stealing supporting characters. The Ma & Pa Kettle series - corny and unsophisticated as they were - proved huge money-makers for Universal Pictures. The hoi polloi just loved watching the antics of these loveable country bumpkins who lived out in Hicksville! In this offering, Ma & Pa play the down-and-out parents of 15 kids who are faced with being evicted from their ramshackle home. Pa wins a slogan contest ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 1999-08-21 Summary: reminds me of growing up in my big family ... I grew up in a family of nine, with parents like man and pa. [3] Rating: 5 Date: 2003-11-24 Summary: Ma & Pa from The Egg and I (1947) get their own movie series. ... This is the first starring role for Ma & Pa Kettle, but not the first film they appeared in. The very first film Majorie Main and Percy Kilbride appeared in as "Ma & Pa Kettle", along with Richard Long was "The Egg And I" (1947). They were only minor characters in the film, but made such an impact and was considered so down-home funny that it was decided they should be given a movie of their own. Thus "Ma & Pa Kettle" (1949) was made. In fact, they made eight more films to follow. The films are quite wholesome and ...more

Call Me Madam
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-09-24 Summary: ETHEL UNLEASHED! ... Accept no substitutes---there's only ONE Ethel Merman, and what better way to preserve her unique power and presence than this fine film version of her 1950 stage hit? And Donald O'Connor's performance is equally fabulous---in fact, the Amazon reviewer who feels that 2 straight hours of Ethel is too much should at least acknowoledge the fact that Donald and Vera Ellen occupy a major amount of screen time on their own. And whereas the performance of Russell Nype in the role of Kenneth Gibson on Broadway created something ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-01-18 Summary: if you like classic movie musicals this is for you !!! ... Call Me Madam shines bright as one of the finest movie musicals ever made at Twentieth Century-Fox! The cast is superb and the acting is extremely convincing. The plot moves along at a very good pace and the way the songs are sprinkled throughout the picture works wonders for the film. The cinematography and the choreography are wonderful and the script was very well written. The quality of the print is very good, too. When the action begins, we quickly meet one of Washington, D.C.'s wealthiest socialites, Sally Adams ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-10-30 Summary: "Hey, boss, where the heck is Lichtenburg?" ... Ethel Merman's greatest triumphs were on the Broadway musical stage, where she starred in such shows as "Annie Get Your Gun", "Something for the Boys", "Girl Crazy", "Happy Hunting" and "Gypsy". On the screen, however, Merman wasn't so lucky. The only stage performance which Merman was granted the opportunity to cement on film was Sally Adams, the Washington hostess with the mostes', in Irving Berlin's CALL ME MADAM. Assigned to the tiny European duchy of Lichtenburg, Washington society hostess-turned Ambassador Sally ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-10-22 Summary: This is my favorite movie!! ... I'm a huge fan of Donald O'Connor, and had no idea this movie existed until reading some of his biography online. So after watching some clips on YouTube and finally renting it from Netflix, I was hooked and bought it. Irving Berlin's music is fantastic, as always, and Ethel Merman does a super job belting out her songs while providing some humor along the way. George Sanders is perfect in his role as the foreign minister, and his singing is heartwarming and pleasant. And let's not forget the singing AND dancing of ...more
Editorial Reviews [1] ... Amazon.com | A great star and a great composer can make a Broadway musical into a smash, as Ethel Merman and Irving Berlin proved with Call Me Madam . Not a bad place to start with a movie, either, and the 1953 film of the show has both Merman and Berlin represented in brassy fashion. Granted, Merman's platinum-throated talents were best suited to the stage, and the production overall has that dutiful, stodgy tone of so many Fox musicals. Extra points for the suavity of George Sanders (he's Merman's love interest...more

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Oxford World's Classics)
Feature: ... ISBN13: 9780199536559; Condition: NEW; Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark. ...more
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-12-16 Summary: ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN by Mark Twain ... Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a novel by Mark Twain, originally published in 1884. It is the sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Ernest Hemingway (and many others) called it the greatest American novel ever. Huck Finn picks up right where Tom Sawyer left off - Huck's abusive father appears to lay claim to Huck's fortune, so Huck fakes his own death and goes down the Mississippi River with Jim, the escaped slave. Much like Tom Sawyer, there's not a lot of plot going on here most of the time, and that's okay, ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2001-01-20 Summary: indeed, a classic--and never boring ... Maybe this book should not, as one reviewer noted, be assigned in high school. But then maybe no books should be assigned to people who are quicker to judge than to understand. Stupid, boring, difficult...hardly. Well--of course it's difficult (like everything that's good), for some good reasons. First of all, it's an illiterate white boy from the deep South--of course he speaks dialect (which is not the same as "he cain't spell"). Second, it's tough subject matter Twain tackles. What would you do in this situation? ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-04-05 Summary: Neither fish (a young adult romp) nor fowl (a coherent serious literary achievement) but entertaining and thought-provoking ... Like many people growing up in the US, I read THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN as an obligatory assignment at school. No one likes obligatory reading, and it was like water off a duck's back. Regretting that I remembered nothing of the novel, I recently re-read it, and I found it entertaining reading, and also much more for a grown-up audience than I expected. Of course the book was only started as a sequel to Twain's novel for boys THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER before being turned towards much more serious themes, ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Called "the veriest trash" by a member of the Concord, Massachusetts Library Board that banned the novel when it was first published, Huckleberry Finn has come to be viewed, as H.L. Mencken put it, as "one of the great masterpieces of the world." Ernest Hemingway wrote that "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn ....There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since." A daringly ironic attack on racism American-style, Twain's...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-05-23 Summary: LEE ... Emory Thomas gives a southerners perspective on the life of Robert E. Lee. The preface of this book gives the reader a sense that they will be given a pro-southern view of the war and while that is true at times the biography is generally balanced well. Lee is portrayed as a hero which he was to the south and shown as a military genius which was mostly true. Lee accomplished amazing things by bold actions and the principles of movement and concentration. This book tracks his childhood where he lived in the shadow of ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-12-09 Summary: An Intimate Portrait of Lee's Little-Known Side ... This is the best book on the market of its kind. It is a fascinating and intimate look into the personal and public life of one of the most revered figures of the Civil War. Robert E. Lee was not a man who wore his heart on his sleeve, and only a handful of very close friends, most of them women, really knew what made him tick. This work exposes his private flaws while celebrating his public strengths. Best of all, it transforms him from the symbolic marble statue which time has created, into the human being that he ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2007-06-27 Summary: Robert E. Lee - A Principled Failure? ... Thomas' book offers a fascinating insight into United States history during the early and mid parts of the nineteenth century. Lee's early career and his family life are treated in great and revealing detail. Robert E. Lee emerges as a man of exceptionally high principles and as a concerned, (but at a distance) father), of seven children. However, to one's great disappointment, Lee emerges from the book as an enigmatic man whom it is difficult to like. A very good read. ...more

Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | The life of Robert E. Lee is a story not of defeat but of triumphtriumph in clearing his family name, triumph in marrying properly, triumph over the mighty Mississippi in his work as an engineer, and triumph over all other military men to become the towering figure who commanded the Confederate army in the American Civil War. But late in life Lee confessed that he "was always wanting something." In this probing and personal biography, Emory Thomas reveals more than the man himself did....more
