The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America
Feature: ... ISBN13: 9780375725609; Condition: NEW; Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark. ...more
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-03-02 Summary: A recent book club read... ... I read Devil in the White City recently with my book club. It was an interesting book and kept ne turning the pages even though non-fiction is often not to my taste. Two stories wind back and forth, one telling of the lead architect, Daniel Burnham, who planned and saw to fruition the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. The other darker tale was of a serial killer who saw that same great event as fertile ground for him to pluck his victims. No one will know how many people Dr. H. H. Holmes lured to his World's Fair Hotel. No ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-03-08 Summary: Loved the World's Fair of 1893 with the Ferris Wheel-Fascinating! ... I expected to like the serial killer aspect of this work the best. However, I found myself totally captivated instead by all the details of getting the World's Fair of 1893 underway in Chicago. The Ferris Wheel was invented for this fair as American engineers vied to come up with something at least as good as the Eiffel Tower, made for the Paris Expo (by Ferris of Pittsburg). Bill Cody had his Wild West show next door to the fair and it was wildly successful. The planning for the fair was incredible. The difficulties ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-03-07 Summary: Thrifit ... I did not receive the book I ordered. When I contacted Thrifit they responded very quickly and refunded my money immediately. Based on their customer service, I would give them another try. ...more
[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-03-04 Summary: More "City" less "Devil" ... First, let me say how impressed I was with Erik Larson's research into the stories he weaves in this book. He's obviously taken a lot of time and energy to get things right. Even if the author wasn't in every World's Fair Planning meeting or watching the evil H.H. Holmes murdering one of his victims you still get a sense that "this happened" and he backs up his quotes with their sources at the end of the story, which flies along nicely for the most part. The "White City" part of this book focuses on the Chicago's World's ...more
Editorial Reviews — [1] ... Review | Author Erik Larson imbues the incredible events surrounding the 1893 Chicago World's Fair with such drama that readers may find themselves checking the book's categorization to be sure that The Devil in the White City is not, in fact, a highly imaginative novel. Larson tells the stories of two men: Daniel H. Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair's construction, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor. Burnham's challenge was immense. In a short period of time, he...more
[2] ... Product Description | Bringing Chicago circa 1893 to vivid life, Erik Larson's spellbinding bestseller intertwines the true tale of two men--the brilliant architect behind the legendary 1893 World's Fair, striving to secure America’s place in the world; and the cunning serial killer who used the fair to lure his victims to their death. Combining meticulous research with nail-biting storytelling, Erik Larson has crafted a narrative with all the wonder of newly discovered history and the thrills of the best...more

This is a great album, especially "Two Step," "All Along the Watchtower," "Warehouse," and "Ants Marching." If you love DMB or even if you don't, buy this album. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-03-27 Summary: A must have! ... One of the best live set lists for Dave Matthews Band. Several of his classics have been reworked with new intros or endings; there are 4 or 5 "new" titles that I don't believe have been recorded previously; and I believe it is the last recorded performance that includes LeRoy Moore. ...more

Pete Seeger's Rainbow Quest - with Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, and Mississippi John Hurt, Hedy West, & Paul Cadwell
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2005-07-28 Summary: Rare Historic Performances ... Shanachie is doing a gret service to all fans of folk and blues by reissuing the mid-1960s "Rainbow Quest" TV show hosted by Pete Seeger on DVD. Each DVD features two shows. This one has an hour of Pete with the great folk-blues players Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry and a second hour show featuring Pete swapping songs and stories with Hedy West, John Hurt and Paul Cadwell. Hedy was an underappreciated singer of old time ballads and other material--she sings a civil rights song in German here--who recorded for Vanguard, ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-05-13 Summary: The Folk Historian On Camera- Pete Seeger Back In The Days ... In a year that has featured various 90th birthday celebrations it is very appropriate to review some of the 1960's television work of Pete Seeger, one of the premier folk anthologists, singers, transmitters of the tradition and "keeper" of the folk flame. This DVD is a "must see" for anyone who is interested in the history of the folk revival of the 1960's , the earnest, folksy style of Pete Seeger or the work of Mississippi John Hurt, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Hedy West or banjoist Paul Cardwell. This DVD contains ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-06-09 Summary: Pete Seeger casual ... Rainbow Quest was a locally and privately produced folk music show that was hosted by and featured Pete Seeger when he was blacklisted. He has brought in a marvelous range of other talent. Pete is the focus, but he makes ample room for his guests to shine. Each show is a delightful relaxed program of great music and interesting conversation. ...more
Editorial Reviews — ... Description | Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee were among the most enduring blues acts of the post-war era, forming an association that was to last three decades. Terry's distinctive harmonica style combining whoops and hollers blended well with McGhee's warm voice and tasteful guitar picking. Along with Pete Seeger, Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie, Brownie and Sonny were part of the burgeoning New York folk scene around 1940, and in their musical reunion here with Pete they perform a captivating mix of traditional...more

The Shadow of the Wind

Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-24 Summary: This book has that quality a John Irving novel used to have ... This book has those epic, coming of age, humorous, and quirky qualities a John Irving novel used to provide for me. This review is not to bash Irving. That statement only serves to support my point that after finishing "The Shadow of the Wind", I had those same feelings of satifaction that I had after reading, "A Prayer for Owen Meany", where at the end you feel a certain sentimentality for the world and the characters you have just experienced. So obviously, I am highly recommending "The Shadow of the Wind" because ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-22 Summary: 427 People (and Counting) Can't be Wrong ... In a word, magnificent. All the praise is just--this book is a rare and delightful pleasure and I highly recommend it. ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-02-23 Summary: NOT VERY ACCURATE HISTORICALLY!!! ... Half way through the book one of the characters claims, that his left testicle was shot out by no other than Teddy Roosevelt himself, (On the Bay of Cochinos)which happened during the Kennedy Presidency 65 years latter. ...more
[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-03-01 Summary: A unique mystery- a delightful read ... You have to be patient reading this novel. The plot is tightly woven - it unfolds like peeling an onion - layer by layer. You'll learn of Barcelona and Spanish customs. ...more
[5] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-27 Summary: Beautifully written ... This is an amazing, beautifully written novel. I wanted to devour it word for word. The mystery takes you everywhere and yet back to the beginning. As we follow Daniel's quest to know the writer of The Shadow of the Wind, Julian Carax, we are drawn into a wonderful cast of colorful characters. I think my favorite was the character of Fermin who was a true friend in the best sense of the word. It's an eternal love story, a mystery, a tale of family. It's the perfect package. ...more

Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-02-26 Summary: I would recommend it to anyone. ... I read this book because my girlfriend works with Autistic children and she wanted to read it together. I didn't expect much; from the cover, I thought it was Young adult liturature. It turns out that it was a great read with a lot of depth. It was amazing how much tension resulted from everyday situations when seen through the eyes of someone with Aspeger's. It definitly increased my perspective on this condition. Despite the tension it was a pleasant read, with a lot of humor. It was a good page turner for me. I ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-03-03 Summary: Wise, in His Own Way, Beyond his Years ... Christopher Boone, the narrator of this story, is a fifteen year old Rain Man. He is as gifted mathematically as Dustin Hoffman was in the movie, but he's as helpless as he was as well, he's socially without a clue. He sees things differently than others, in his words, "My memory is like a filmÉ.And when people ask me to remember something I can simply press Rewind and Fast Forward and Pause like on a video recorder." He takes what he's told and what he sees at face value. When he discovers Wellington, a neighbor's ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-26 Summary: Fantastic book and very moving ... Well I read many of the reviews and I was very disappointed to see how many people hated this book. Since I didn't know anything about autism I was very interested to see what this book was about. I really, really liked it and I now want to lean more about autism. If I think that way after reading this maybe there are others who think similar and that is a good thing. I don't believe this is the only way to view autism, but it is A way. THIS IS A NOVEL or fiction, not a true storry! Since I read this book I talked ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-27 Summary: High School Reading ... I am the school psychologist for a class of teens with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and related disorders. I purchased a classroom set of books, including the discussion guide and audio set, for the teacher to use as a class project for literature and as part of our disability awareness. Students with AS have a poor sense of self which underlies their deficits in Theory of Mind (that others have thoughts and feelings different from their own) and social communication. The main character, Christopher, so accurately demonstrates ...more
Editorial Reviews — [1] ... Review | Mark Haddon's bitterly funny debut novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time , is a murder mystery of sorts--one told by an autistic version of Adrian Mole. Fifteen-year-old Christopher John Francis Boone is mathematically gifted and socially hopeless, raised in a working-class home by parents who can barely cope with their child's quirks. He takes everything that he sees (or is told) at face value, and is unable to sort out the strange behavior of his elders and peers. Late one night,...more
[2] ... Product Description | Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched. And he detests the color yellow. This improbable story of Christopher’s quest to investigate the suspicious death of a neighborhood dog makes for one of the most captivating, unusual, and widely heralded novels in recent years....more
